Learn from Good Examples

By Janice Hall

Overview

The book of Hebrews is meant to encourage, empower, and challenge Christian believers. In Hebrews chapter 11, the author gives us a definition of faith. The writer gives numerous examples to substantiate this definition. Faith is not blind, senseless, or gullible, but godly faith is based on trust. This trust is based on what we know of God, relying on Him for the things we do not know, therefore “ the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”.

Most of the chapter gives us examples of these figures that knew enough about God to trust Him. They obeyed even when they were challenged with doubts and fears. Abel’s faith led him to offer a sacrifice unlike Cain. Noah displayed unwavering faith and belief, despite not knowing the nature of the flood. Abraham’s faith is demonstrated through his willingness to offer his son, trusting in God’s promises, as Sarah grew in faith to trust God with the seemingly impossible.

Related Scriptures; Genesis 4:3-7; 5:21-24; 6:9-22; 12:1-5; 17: 15-22

In Genesis 4:3-7, the writer speaks of Cain and Abel sacrifices to God. God favors Abel’s offering while Cain is rejected, showing their approach to worship. God offers to Cain a warning and guidance. Genesis 5:21-24, describes the life of Enoch, who was a descendant of Seth. After living for 65 years, Enoch became the father of Methuselah, and “ walked with God” for 300 years.

This section of Genesis 6:9-22, is called the “ generations of Noah”. God had to decide on judgment ,because of the wickedness and violence on the earth. Noah is depicted as a man who is blameless and righteous, and finding favor with God. God instructs Noah to build an ark to protect his family and two of every animal species. God made a covenant to never destroy the earth with a flood.

Genesis 12:1-5 shows us God’s plan to make for himself a great nation, a great people and He chose Abram “ father of a great nation.” In Genesis 17: 15-22, God changes Sarai’s name to Sarah, to reiterate the promise of the miraculous nature of the event of Sarah’s age. This passage gives a great testimony of God’s faithfulness and trust in His promises.

Practical Point: People of faith act on what God says, leaving the results to Him.

When we act on God’s word, we apply the teachings and commandments to our lives, and not just hearing or reading it. This includes connecting with other believers, prayer, and studying the Word. We are to be open to the Holy Spirit for direction and guidance. As we live according with God’s Word, we are showing love, kindness and extending forgiveness. We can experience the transformative power of faith and walk in God’s grace, by actively engaging with God’s Word and applying the teachings to our life.
