Live in the Light of the Gospel

By Janice Hall
Scripture Lesson Text: Colossians 4:1-6

Overview

In the previous chapters of Colossians, the letter spoke of the supremacy of Christ,
false teaching and gave instructions for Christian living. We see in the fourth chapter continued instructions regarding Christian conversation. Paul supported the church through his prayers for them. Paul advises the believers to be wise towards the unbelievers, and make most of every opportunity. A believer’s words should be gracious when helping others and offering assistance.

This chapter strongly emphasizes the importance of prayer for one another, intercessory prayer. The verses highlight the important of Christian community and support for each other. Sharing the gospel and building relationships with those outside the faith are strongly encouraged. There is a need for discernment as believers interact with each other and to speak with grace. The chapter ends with a request for remembrance of Paul’s imprisonment and a prayer for grace.

Practical Point
We should give thanks in prayer frequently

“In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:18). Many scriptures give us the importance of giving thanks in all circumstances. We are to give thanks for health, family and God’s provisions for our lives. When we exhibit and express our gratitude through prayer, our relationship with God creates deeper intimacy through faith and trust in Him.
