Listening With Our Eyes

Prayer is often defined simply as “talking with God.” While that definition is true, it can also unintentionally reduce prayer to something ordinary, conversational, and familiar. Human dialogue assumes mutual discovery. Prayer, however, is divine encounter.

When we pray, we are not entering a conversation between equals. We are entering communion with the transcendent, holy, sovereign God whose wisdom precedes our thoughts and whose knowledge is not dependent upon our explanation.

In ordinary conversation, we speak to be understood. In prayer, we speak before the One who already knows us completely.

Prayer is transformational before it is informational.

This week, Pastor Hillman Jr. opened our new Bible Study series, Personal Preparation for Worship, by exploring how prayer forms our ability to notice God. Through Luke 7:36–50, Jesus intentionally slows Simon the Pharisee down and teaches him how to see what pride, familiarity, and judgment naturally overlook.

The woman in the story recognized what Simon could not. While Simon evaluated externally, the woman discerned spiritually. Her posture revealed attentiveness, humility, reverence, and awareness of who Jesus truly was.

The lesson reminded us that prayer is not merely about speaking louder, longer, or more often. Prayer is also about becoming receptive. Sometimes God instructs through silence. Sometimes His presence answers before words emerge. Sometimes the Spirit interprets groanings deeper than speech itself, as Romans 8:26 teaches.

True prayer prepares the heart for worship because prayer trains us to notice God rightly.

Before worship becomes public, it must first become personal. Before we gather corporately, we must learn privately how to slow down, discern, listen, and see.

This new series invites believers to move beyond passive attendance and into intentional spiritual preparation. Worship does not begin when the service starts. Worship begins when the heart becomes attentive to the presence of God.
